Despite rising gas prices, this is the first summer since the Covid-19 lockdowns. As a result, people are even more eager than usual to take long-awaited vacations. It is important to remember that the best way to avoid auto body repair bills is to avoid accidents. This means keeping your cool when it’s hot, which we’ve covered in previous blog posts about summer road trip safety.
Pay Less at the Pump
High gas prices can get anyone hot under the collar. If your summer plans include driving, there’s no way to avoid these costs completely. However, here are a few practical steps you can take to ease your pain at the pump (at least a bit!):
Don’t speed
Although it’s a myth that the faster you go, the more fuel you consume, there are ways to reduce your fuel consumption by paying attention to the speedometer. For example, don’t brake unnecessarily. Doing so is not only hard on fuel consumption but it confuses drivers around you, which could lead to crashes. And driving over the speed limit can lead to accidents. So, even if it doesn’t save fuel costs, it’s worthwhile to observe the posted speed limit.
Properly Inflate your tires
Driving with low tire air pressure makes your car work harder, which uses more gas. The reason for this is because under-inflated tires cause more road resistance than their well inflated counterparts.
Use Cruise Control
Maintaining a consistent speed prevents absentminded speeding and unnecessary braking. However, if you use cruise control, make sure to turn up the a/c and the music, so you won’t fall asleep. The Sleep Foundation reports an average 90,000 accidents each year result from sleepy drivers.
Stop for Fuel
Even if your bladder is monstrous, take plenty of rest stops. And gas up at regular intervals, so you won’t be left stranded and at risk of being hit when your vehicle is disabled by the side of the road.
Keep Your Cool
Although the hot summer heat can make you hot under the collar, but there are ways to stay a little cooler when it’s hot:
Consider the heat when planning your day.
Plan outdoor excursions when it’s cooler out and stay indoors during the heat of the day.
Dress for hot weather.
Don’t wear clothing that keeps in the heat or becomes sticky or hard to move in. Clothing made from cotton or linens are a good bet and wear a hat to prevent sunburn.
Eat cold foods.
Hot and spicy foods will only add to your discomfort when you’re hot.
Take plenty of water with you.
Excess heat can cause dehydration. Water will help you avoid heat exhaustion and make it through the day.
Avoid Road Rage
Take these simple steps to keep your anger in check:
- Don’t procrastinate when it comes to departure time. If you’re running late, you are much more prone to anger.
- Play calm music. Tunes can help distract you and keep you in a good mood.
- Create a pleasant atmosphere in your car. Keep your car a comfortable temperature and have a drink nearby.
- Don’t dwell on things that don’t matter. Take time to enjoy the ride!
